Hint: The inspo for this hue is in the cosmos.

We had the chance to snag Andrea for a few minutes to discuss the velvety blue hue in more detail. She says, “Blue Nova is a statement color, but it’s dialed back. It’s comfortable, and can be used on all four walls. It encourages people to dabble in color.” The color is a big departure from last year’s top pick, which was Raspberry Blush 2008-30, a “dynamic, charismatic” coral tinged with pink. “While we still see people being more confident with their colors, Blue Nova hits the right note. It’s not a shy color and it stands on its own. But it’s a color that people can live with because it’s a mid-tone.” Think of it as a fresh alternative to navy! It’s a balance of livable and boundary-pushing, evoking the idea of exploration. The deep richness of the color is very reminiscent of outer space, something Benjamin Moore plays on quite a bit.

In fact, Benjamin Moore really leaned into the galactic theme by announcing the color Blue Origin's Orbital Launch Site in Cape Canaveral, FL. (Cool, right?!) Benjamin Moore also partnered with Blue Origin and its nonprofit Club for the Future to reimagine design at local community hospitals, create space-themed experiences at upcoming events, and more, as part of their mission to inspire and mobilize future generations about STEM education and careers in the space industry, the brand states.

How to Incorporate Blue Nova

If you’re wondering how you can bring this bold color into your home, Andrea assures us it’s incredibly easy. Use it to drench a room or just highlight architectural features like molding, a fireplace, windows, and doors. It’s a highly versatile color when it comes to mixing it with other materials—Andrea says you can pair it with light white oak or darker walnut and it’ll still shine. It’ll also complement a variety of metallic finishes like chrome, matte black, and even hardware in brushed or antique gold. Looking for other paint colors to use alongside it? Andrea suggests this smart hack: Combine Blue Nova with colors you can find in a sunsetting sky. Think oranges, yellows, even light blues. After all, Blue Nova was inspired by the sky!

In addition to formally announcing their Color of the Year, Benjamin Moore released their Color Trends 2024 palette, which offers ten trendy shades, including Blue Nova, that can work individually or together and help blend traditional and modern design styles. Andrea says, “The Color Trends 2024 palette tells a story of duality–juxtaposing light against dark, warm and cool, showcasing complementary and contrasting color pairings. These contrasts invite us to break away from the ordinary to explore new places and collect color memories that shape the hues used in our homes.”
